Ocean City’s Park Place Jewelers Honors 25 Years of Fine Jewelry, Signature Collections and Lifetime Connections
By Grace Silipigni
When you stop into Park Place Jewelers, you’re likely to find owners Todd and Jill Ferrante behind display cases full of sparkling gemstones and gleaming 14K gold. Their 13-year-old daughter, Sophia, is never far behind, eager to assist shoppers in their hunt for fine jewelry. As Park Place enters its 25th year, the Ferrantes reflect on the success of their family-owned jewelry store and extend a heartwarming thank you to those who have long supported their growth.
“What is most important to us in our celebration of 25 years is to thank everyone that has supported us – the countless clients who have shopped with us year after year. Without them, we could not have gotten to where we are today,” says Todd. “You need people who are loyal, and you need clients who support you. I cannot thank them enough. Certainly the residents have supported us, but so have Ocean City vacationers.”
He continues, “I especially want to thank our staff throughout the years who worked so hard and helped us earn the reputation that we have in the community. Without their hard work, none of this would be possible.”
Todd made his jewelry debut in May 1996 after gaining over a decade of entrepreneurial experience in the telescope picture industry. The young jeweler-to-be spent several years learning the trade, seeking advice from friends in the business and outside educators. “I didn’t know a lot [when I first started out], but I received an education and attended jewelry manufacturing shows,” remembers Todd. “I also went to the Gemological Institute of America in New York to get my diamond education.”
Todd’s boardwalk store, Michael’s Fine Jewelers, touted much success, thanks to his loyal client base and steadfast support from now wife, Jill, a former schoolteacher and client who met at Michael’s during Todd’s second summer in the jewelry business. “I’ve always loved jewelry. Gold was something I enjoyed purchasing for myself or giving as a gift,” says Jill.
In the fall of 1998, expanding the business landed on Todd’s radar. An opportunity arose at the nearby Park Place Hotel, the owners of which were close family friends of Todd. As part of the hotel’s remodel, the owners invited Todd to open a jewelry store on the first floor of the hotel. By fall, Todd had closed Michael’s Fine Jewelers on 5th Street and moved it to West Ocean City and rebranded both stores as Park Place Jewelers, an ode to the landmark hotel.
It was during their hotel’s tenancy that Jill and Todd truly honed their craft and left a distinct mark on the local jewelry market. In 2002, the couple dubbed a one-of-a-kind collection the Ocean City Hook Collection. Arguably Park Place Jeweler’s most revered line, the collection began with the Original Ocean City Destination Bracelet, but now boasts a full ensemble of bangles, rings, pendants and necklaces available in gold, silver and opal accents. “People really like the design of the [interlocked] O and C hook, and they like the fact that [the collection] is a great memory of time spent in Ocean City,” says Todd. “We wanted to be unique and the most important thing you can do in business is listen to your clients; they’ll tell you what they’re looking for.”
Catering to customers’ request for the sea life and nautical-themed pieces, the Ferrantes recently incorporated genuine Ocean City sand into the jewelry line. Park Place Jewelers’ offerings extend far beyond beach-themed embellishments, however. The jewelry store carries an array of top-of-line designers featured in high-fashion magazines and unavailable elsewhere in the Ocean City community and beyond. “We are definitely working hard to be the best jewelry store in the area,” says Jill. “We are always adding new collections and jewelry designs to offer something for everyone.”
In addition to showcasing precious metals and stones, the Ferrantes long to create an experience of luxury and intimacy. They opened Park Place Plaza in 2018 to facilitate their dream. The Plaza, located in West Ocean City, is now home to Park Place Jewelers’ 4,000-square-foot showroom featuring crystal chandeliers, curved wood showcases and the Eastern Shore’s largest selection of watches, engagement rings and unique diamond and color stone jewelry. “We’re looking to bring top-notch service to the area, as well as an unforgettable experience,” explains Todd.
Above all else, the Ferrantes cherish the opportunity to connect with customers and witness their life’s journey through jewelry. “Jewelry is generational. There are a lot of memories associated with it,” explains Todd, such as placing your grandmother’s diamond ring into a modern pendant setting. “It is a significant deal for us to be a part of that process. It’s almost like we’re a part of making someone else’s dream come true.”
“We’ve developed relationships that have withstood these 25 years. We have watched clients become parents and grandparents,” adds Jill. “It’s [a pleasure] being able to create [heirloom] pieces for them.”
In addition to putting a sparkle in people’s lives, Park Place Jewelers supports an array of local charities and organizations. “We are proud to be a part of this amazing community,” says Jill.
